Thermage treatment without the horror stories: what to check before you book

Bad Thermage side effects mostly trace back to who sets the energy, which tip is used and who is screened out, and all three can be checked. In a review of 600+ treatments, the usual redness lasted under 24 hours.

If you searched Thermage treatment and landed on a story about burns, a dent in the cheek or a face that looked the same three months later, you are probably deciding whether to book at all. Those stories are worth reading carefully, because most of them trace back to a short list of causes.

The manufacturer's own safety information lists burns, blisters, surface irregularities and numbness among the possible effects. A published review of more than 600 treatments on an earlier Thermage system found that changing how the energy was delivered changed how the treatment went. A large part of the risk sits in how a session is run, not only in the machine.

This page turns those causes into four checks you can make at any clinic, and under each one says how we handle it here. By the end you will also know what is normal afterwards and what is a reason to call. Our position is plain: the director fires every shot from a genuine tip, after a scan, and you can see the details on our Thermage FLX treatment page and the Thermage FLX price list.

Where bad Thermage side effects come from

Thermage FLX heats the dermis with monopolar radiofrequency while the tip cools the surface between pulses. When that balance goes wrong, heat reaches the upper layers of the skin. Solta Medical's safety information names that as the route to burns, blisters and scabbing.

Thermage side effects people report, and the check that answers each

None of these is common. In the Weiss review, 2.7% of treatments produced a temporary side effect, and the expected redness and swelling lasted under 24 hours. The checks below are about lowering the odds of the rest, and none of them is a promise.

Check one: who sets the energy and fires the shots

Solta's provider labelling warns that improper use of the system may cause injury to the patient. Weiss and colleagues report that as protocols moved to multiple passes at lower energy, outcomes and patient acceptance improved. Both point the same way: in a Thermage treatment, the hands and the chart matter as much as the device.

Here, Dr. Jang Dong-hoon, Founder and Medical Director, fires every shot himself. Not a nurse, and not a rotating operator. Ask any clinic this question first, including us.

What the appointment looks like

  1. 3D Meta-Vu analysis. Makeup comes off and the skin is photographed under four kinds of light. It takes about 10 minutes and is included in the consultation.
  2. Consultation with the director. He decides whether Thermage is the right depth for you at all, and says so if it is not.
  3. Photo design and a chart per zone. Energy level and shot count are set for each area: cheeks, jawline, around the mouth, forehead, neck or eyes.
  4. The session. Each pulse brings a deep warmth, vibration from the handpiece and cooling on the surface. The energy is adjusted pulse by pulse to how your tissue responds.
  5. Before you leave. Your skin may look pink for a few hours, and makeup is fine the same day.

Plan 2–2.5 hours for a Thermage treatment visit, consultation included. The sensation is moderate, and we do not put a number on it, because it differs from person to person.

Check two: which tip, and whether it is genuine

A Thermage tip is single-use and counts its own shots, so the tip decides how much treatment you get and what the price is based on. Solta states that it does not authorise third-party sellers for the US market and has no obligation to support products bought from them.

We use only genuine Solta tips: the 4.0 cm² total tip for the face and the 0.25 cm² eye tip around the lids. Our price is set by the shots fired from a certified tip, and your quote names the shot count: 600, 900, 255 or 450.

  • Which tip will be used, and is it a genuine Solta tip?
  • How many shots does my quote buy, and on which tip?
  • Who fires them, and is the chart drawn before the session?

Eye Thermage

Eyelid skin is treated with the 0.25 cm² eye tip, and Eye Thermage has its own line on our list. Solta's labelling requires plastic eye shields, never metal, for work on the eyelids or within the orbital rim. Whether 255 or 450 shots fits depends on how far around the eye the treated skin extends, and that is set at consultation.

Check three: whether you were screened before the first shot

Solta's labelling rules a Thermage treatment out for anyone with a pacemaker, a cardioverter defibrillator or any other implanted electrical device. It also lists groups the system has not been studied in, including treatment over skin fillers and during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

  • An implanted electronic device, such as a pacemaker: you cannot have radiofrequency treatment here, and we say so before anything is booked.
  • Metal implants, threads or filler: tell us before the session, so the chart takes them into account.
  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding, diabetes, lupus, epilepsy or cold sores: tell us your medical history at consultation, since these are on the manufacturer's not-studied list.
  • Skin that has dropped rather than thinned: Ultherapy Prime reaches the SMAS, a layer Thermage does not.
  • Reactive skin, or a first radiofrequency treatment: ask about Oligio, a sensor-guided monopolar RF on our list.

A screening that ends in "not Thermage" is the check working, and it saves you a Thermage treatment that was never going to help. It is far easier to hear at consultation than to find out at month three.

Check four: a price fixed before treatment, and no pressure to start

A figure that rises once you are lying down, or a package pushed in the chair, is a reason to stand up. Here the final price is confirmed after the analysis and consultation and before treatment, and there is no obligation to go ahead.

Thermage prices: price list of 20 August 2026
OptionShotsPrice (KRW)
Thermage FLX (face)600 shots1,990,000
Thermage FLX (face)900 shots2,690,000
Eye Thermage255 shots990,000
Eye Thermage450 shots1,890,000

Prices are from the list of 20 August 2026 and exclude 10% VAT. The final figure is confirmed at consultation, after the 3D Meta-Vu scan and before anything is started.

There is no deposit, and the consultation fee is waived if you are treated the same day. For what moves a quote, read the full Thermage FLX price breakdown. For the wider checklist on any clinic in Seoul, see what a factory clinic is and how to check.

What is normal after Thermage, and what is a reason to call

Knowing what normal looks like is how you tell a problem from a pink evening. A Thermage treatment leaves no wound, so most people go straight back to their day.

After Thermage FLX: what is normal, and when to contact us
WhenWhat to expect
The same dayRedness and warmth for a few hours, sometimes until evening. Washing and makeup are fine.
The first daysSkip the sauna on the day. Avoid alcohol on the day, and ideally for 1–2 days. SPF 30+ every day.
Months 3 to 6Collagen keeps building, and most of the change shows.
Months 6 to 12How long the effect typically lasts, so we plan 1–2 sessions a year.
Contact usNumbness lasting over 2 weeks, any blister, or pain lasting over a week.

Judge the result at month two or three, not in the mirror that evening. A face that looks the same the next morning is what Thermage normally does on day one.

You can fly the next day. If other treatments share the trip, read how soon you can fly after each treatment before you set the order. After you are home, aftercare questions go to the same WhatsApp thread.

Thermage vs HIFU: when the answer is a different depth

A Thermage treatment works in the dermis, and HIFU such as Ultherapy reaches the SMAS. Thin, crepey skin points to Thermage, and tissue that has dropped points to Ultherapy. When both are present, the two can complement each other.

We decide which at consultation, not from a brand name. The layer-by-layer comparison is in Ultherapy vs Thermage, and the dual-frequency option is set against Thermage in Xerf vs Thermage.

When you are ready, tick Thermage in the booking selector and send your dates on WhatsApp. We answer within 24 business hours, and an interpreter from our own staff joins your visit free of charge.

The short version

  1. Solta's safety information lists burns, blisters, surface irregularities, numbness and swelling among possible Thermage effects, and rules it out with a pacemaker or other implanted electrical device.
  2. Weiss et al. reviewed over 600 treatments: 2.7% had a temporary side effect, and multiple passes at lower energy went with better outcomes.
  3. At THE Beautiful Clinic, Dr. Jang Dong-hoon fires every shot from genuine Solta tips, 4.0 cm² for the face and 0.25 cm² for the eyelids.
  4. Normal after a session is redness and warmth for a few hours; numbness past 2 weeks, a blister or pain past a week is a reason to contact the clinic.
  5. Collagen keeps building for 3–6 months and results typically last 6–12 months, so the clinic plans 1–2 sessions a year.

Questions patients ask

What are the side effects of Thermage?

Mild redness and swelling are the usual ones, and in a published review of over 600 treatments they lasted under 24 hours. Solta also lists less common effects: burns or blisters, surface irregularities, numbness or tingling for up to several weeks, lumps in the neck and temporary darkening of the skin.

Who should not have Thermage?

Anyone with a pacemaker, a defibrillator or another implanted electrical device. Metal implants, threads, filler, pregnancy and other medical history should be raised at consultation before anything is booked.

How do I know the Thermage tip is genuine?

Ask which tip will be used and how many shots your quote buys on it. At THE Beautiful Clinic we use only genuine Solta tips, the 4.0 cm² total tip and the 0.25 cm² eye tip, and Dr. Jang Dong-hoon fires every shot.

Does Thermage hurt?

The sensation is moderate: deep warmth with each pulse, vibration from the handpiece and cooling on the surface. It varies from person to person.

How long does Thermage last, and how often should I have it?

Collagen keeps building for three to six months and results typically last six to twelve months. We plan it once or twice a year rather than as a course.

How much is Thermage in Korea?

At THE Beautiful Clinic, Thermage FLX is 1,990,000 KRW for 600 shots and 2,690,000 KRW for 900 shots, and Eye Thermage starts at 990,000 KRW for 255 shots, on the price list of 20 August 2026 and before 10% VAT. The final figure is confirmed at consultation, before treatment.

Can I fly the day after Thermage?

Yes. There is no wound, so a flight the next day is fine. Send your dates on WhatsApp and we will place the session in your stay.

Results and recovery vary between individuals, and every treatment can have side effects. Prices are from the clinic's price list and are confirmed at consultation. This article is general information, not a diagnosis.
