Choosing PDRN in Korea for dry skin? Check the route before the brand

A PDRN cream and a PDRN injection share a name but not a depth. In Seoul, our consultation starts with a 3D skin scan and the clinic sits 2 minutes from Nonhyeon Station Exit 5.

Your cheeks feel tight by midday, or your mother's skin now flakes every winter, and a Seoul pharmacy shelf holds a dozen PDRN serums. If you're comparing PDRN in Korea for dry skin, check the route before the brand: a PDRN serum mostly works as a moisturiser on the surface, while injected PDRN is placed in the dermis, where its repair signals can act.

The reason is size. Healthy skin lets very few molecules through, the working ceiling dermatologists quote is about 500 daltons, and PDRN, short for polydeoxyribonucleotide, is a chain of DNA fragments far larger than that. This page is written for readers in their 40s and 50s, and for anyone shopping on behalf of a parent. It covers how to read a PDRN label, when a syringe is worth discussing, and what the review threads usually skip.

Does a PDRN serum reach the skin that needs it?

Mostly not. The outer layer of skin exists to keep large molecules out, and a 2000 paper in Experimental Dermatology set out the working rule that compounds above roughly 500 daltons pass through poorly. PDRN fragments sit far above that size.

That doesn't make a PDRN cream pointless. A PDRN serum still holds water on the surface through its base, usually humectants such as glycerin, panthenol or hyaluronic acid, and for mild dryness that may be all your skin is asking for. What the jar can't deliver is the dermal effect described in injection and wound studies. When a product label talks about regeneration, it is borrowing language from research on injected or wound-applied PDRN.

There is one nuance. Broken skin lets far more through than intact skin, which is part of why so much PDRN research looks at wounds. Healthy dry cheeks are not broken skin.

So when you stand at the shelf, read the back of the box rather than the front:

  • Where PDRN sits in the list. Ingredients are listed roughly from highest to lowest amount. PDRN, sometimes written as sodium DNA, near the end means a small dose, which is common, and tells you the base does most of the moisturising.
  • What the base is. For dry skin, glycerin, panthenol, ceramides or squalane near the top matter more than the PDRN line.
  • Whether fragrance is added. Fragrance and essential oils are a frequent trigger for irritation on a barrier that is already flaking, so a formula without added fragrance is the lower-risk pick.

What injected PDRN does differently

Injected PDRN works as a repair signal, not as a filler. A 2021 review in Pharmaceuticals describes PDRN binding the adenosine A2A receptor and supplying building blocks that cells reuse, supporting tissue repair and quieter inflammation in wound models.

Most of that evidence comes from wound healing rather than cosmetic dryness, and it's fair to read it with that in mind.

For dry, thinning skin the reasoning is indirect: a dermis in better repair may support a surface that holds water better. That is a plausible mechanism, not a promise.

Polynucleotides (PN), the longer DNA chains used in products such as Rejuran, are close relatives. A 2025 comparison in Pharmaceutics explains that PN's longer, more viscous chains add a hydrating, scaffold-like effect, while PDRN's shorter fragments act more through receptor signalling. A systematic review of polynucleotides in aesthetic medicine, published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology in 2025, reported improvements in skin quality measures across its studies, while noting that many were small and used different protocols.

Our skin booster menu spans PN, PLA, PLLA, PDO, CaHA, exosomes and pure type-1 collagen, and each works on its own timeline. It also lists a salmon PDRN injection. When dryness is more about water content than repair, the hyaluronic acid skin booster page covers the other route people tend to compare.

Pharmacy jar or clinic syringe: how they line up

The jar suits mild dryness at home; the syringe is a doctor's decision for dryness that comes with thinning skin.

Read your own row honestly. If your skin is dry but otherwise firm, an unscented cream with glycerin or ceramides near the top of the list and a gentler cleanser may do more than any injection. If dryness comes with thinning, crepey texture or skin that takes weeks to settle after a breakout, an injection plan becomes a reasonable question for the exam.

What PDRN review threads don't tell you

Most PDRN review posts, from Korean pharmacy hauls to skincare threads, leave out the cause of the dryness. Threads and short videos are good at describing how a cream feels on day three and bad at telling you why the reviewer's skin was dry in the first place. The same questions come up again and again:

  • Which brand should I buy? Threads rank by texture, scent and bottle size. They rarely say whether the reviewer's dryness came from age, a cold climate, over-cleansing or a medication.
  • Is the pharmacy version the same as the injection? It shares the molecule and the name, not the depth. That difference is the whole story of this page.
  • Will it fix my dryness? Dryness from a weak barrier usually responds first to stopping what strips it: hot water, strong foaming cleansers, frequent scrubs.
  • Did it work for older skin? Photos in threads are taken under different light, at different times of day, often after makeup removal. They can't show what changed underneath.

What a thread can't tell you is your own skin type, your Fitzpatrick type, whether your skin is dry or simply dehydrated, and whether the flaking is actually eczema or rosacea, which need a diagnosis rather than a booster.

Who should hold off on PDRN injections, and what are the risks?

People who are pregnant or breastfeeding, anyone with an active infection or flare where the needle would go, and anyone with a known allergy to fish-derived products should raise it before any PDRN injection, and are usually advised to wait. PDRN is typically sourced from salmon or trout DNA, which is why that allergy question matters.

The common after-effects are local and short: redness, swelling, small raised bumps along the injection points that tend to settle within hours to a couple of days, and bruising. The 2025 systematic review described adverse events in its included studies as generally mild and transient, but rare problems such as infection or persistent nodules are possible with any injection.

Tell the doctor about:

  1. Isotretinoin, now or in recent months
  2. Blood thinners or supplements that make you bruise easily
  3. Any filler placed in the last few months
  4. Retinoids or exfoliating acids used in the week before
  5. Itching, rash or cracking skin, which may point to a condition other than dryness

Skin responds differently from person to person, and the in-person exam decides whether an injection makes sense on this trip at all.

Planning a first visit in Seoul

Consultation begins with a 3D skin scan. I do the consultation, the plan and the treatment myself, and no counsellor sells you a package. Lasers, boosters and injectables can often be done straight after the consultation, which matters if you only have a few days in the city.

I'm Dr. Jang Dong-hoon, Founder & Medical Director of THE Beautiful Clinic. I'm also a member of 13 Korean and Japanese medical societies.

Come with clean skin and no makeup if you can. The address is 2F Jinryeong Building, 545-12 Gangnam-daero, Seocho-gu, Seoul, a 2-minute walk from Nonhyeon Station (Sinbundang Line), Exit 5. Our home page has the map and phone number. Hours run Monday to Thursday 10:30 to 19:30, Friday 10:30 to 20:30 and Saturday 10:30 to 16:30, closed Sundays and public holidays. You can message us in English or Bahasa Indonesia, and the booking page lets you pick a time once your dates are set.

If you'd like to talk it through before flying, our post on what to ask before you fly to Seoul lists the questions worth sending ahead.

Dry skin care while you're in Seoul

The cleanser and exfoliator you pick in Seoul often matter more for dry skin than any PDRN product. Choose a low-foam or cream cleanser, keep water lukewarm, and treat exfoliation as occasional rather than daily. Long flights dry skin out further, so a plain occlusive cream on the plane does more than a serum.

If an injection or laser is on your plan, skip retinoids and strong acids for a few days beforehand and keep sun exposure low. Afterwards, go back to a simple routine for a few days rather than testing new products on freshly treated skin. For a wider view of the injectable options people compare, our skin booster injection guide sets them side by side.

Still choosing between a basket of serums and a clinic visit? Take one daylight photo of your cheeks by a window, no makeup, and send it on WhatsApp with your age, your current products and your Seoul dates. We'll reply on WhatsApp so you can plan the visit; whether an injection suits you is decided at the in-person exam.

The short version

  1. PDRN molecules are far larger than the size skin lets through, so serums act mainly as surface moisturisers.
  2. Injected PDRN works in the dermis as a repair signal; most evidence comes from wound healing research.
  3. Review threads rate texture, not the cause of your dryness.
  4. Pregnancy, active skin infection and fish-derived product allergy are reasons to raise questions before any injection.
  5. A first visit in Seoul starts with a 3D skin scan, and boosters can often follow the consultation the same day.

Questions patients ask

Can a Korean PDRN serum replace a PDRN injection?

Not in the same way. PDRN molecules are much larger than what intact skin usually absorbs, so a serum works mainly as a surface moisturiser. An injection places PDRN in the dermis, which is where the studied repair effects take place.

Is PDRN the same as salmon DNA injection?

Yes, the names usually refer to the same thing. PDRN is a mixture of DNA fragments typically sourced from salmon or trout. People with a known fish-derived product allergy should mention it before any treatment.

What is the difference between PDRN and PN?

Both come from DNA. PN uses longer, more viscous chains that add a hydrating, scaffold-like effect, while PDRN uses shorter fragments that act more through receptor signalling. Which one fits depends on what the skin exam shows.

How long do bumps last after a PDRN injection?

Small raised bumps at the injection points usually settle within hours to a couple of days. Redness and occasional bruising follow a similar pattern. Plan the injection early in your stay if you have photos or meetings later in the trip.

Can I get PDRN on the same day as my consultation in Seoul?

Often yes. Boosters and injectables can usually be done straight after the consultation if the exam shows they suit you. Medication, recent filler or an active skin flare can change that decision.

Which Korean face wash suits dry skin before a skin booster?

Low-foam or cream cleansers used with lukewarm water strip less of the skin barrier than strong foaming washes. Avoid scrubs and strong acids in the days before an injection or laser. The brand matters less than how gently the cleanser treats your barrier.

Results and recovery vary between individuals, and every treatment can have side effects. Prices are from the clinic's price list and are confirmed at consultation. This article is general information, not a diagnosis.
